Equal is mathematical. Balanced is visual.

An equal-border mat uses the same top and bottom dimension. Bottom weighting adds visual mass below the artwork so the image can appear better centered.

How the calculation works

Left and right borders remain equal. The chosen bottom weight is added to the lower border while the remaining vertical space is divided between top and bottom. It changes presentation, not the window size.

Choose with the finished location in mind

• Start with equal borders for geometric, modern, or tightly grouped work.
• Try modest bottom weighting for a traditional presentation or work displayed above eye level.
• Check that the narrowest border leaves enough material for reliable cutting.
• View a full-size paper outline from normal viewing distance.

For multiple openings

Collage mats balance an entire opening block inside the mat. Outer margins and internal gutters work together, so judge the complete grid rather than one opening at a time.
