Mat guide

Cover enough edge to hold the art—not the subject.

Overlap is the amount of artwork hidden under each side of the mat window. RabbetReady subtracts twice that value from both artwork dimensions.

Start conservatively

A quarter-inch overlap is a common planning starting point for flat paper art, but the right amount depends on the paper edge, mounting method, image placement, condition, and conservation requirements.

Check all four edges

1. Measure the physical sheet, not an assumed print size.
2. Mark the important image area with removable guides outside the art.
3. Check whether signatures, deckled edges, plate marks, or borders should remain visible.
4. Use the smallest overlap that safely retains the work under expected movement.
